UNITED STATES OF AMERICA - National Importance

Welcome to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). Located in the heart of Chicago, we are part of a thriving art community with access to world-class resources. As a leader in art education for more than 140 years, SAIC provides the inspiration for those who grasp the complexity of our culture and strive to make a contribution of their own. Our students, faculty, and alumni are the makers of images, words, objects, and sounds that forever shape and alter our world. Be sure to visit the Wired, Events, Profiles and Gallery links below and on every page of this site as they will give you a more intimate view of the life and community at SAIC.

It is true that art museums are about the stubborn, matter-of-factness of things: the works of art. But access to the Art Institute's collection has always been enhanced by words and reproduced images. With the launch of our redesigned Web site, we acknowledge the importance of digitized access to the works of art. Browse the collection by selecting one of the categories shown on the left side of the page. Or, search by entering terms into the "Quick Search."

Here you will learn about the character and structure of our collection and our educational programs and exhibitions. You will also learn how to visit and contact us easily. I very much look forward to you visiting the museum. Explore our online collection, which offers access to over 25,000 works and basic information about works of art from all areas of our encyclopedic collection.

In this website, you will find examples of our varied activities. In addition to learning about our founder, trustees, director, and staff, you can link to many other tapestry sites. We hope that, whether you are a weaver, collector, curator, or newcomer, you will discover many useful connections to tapestry-related resources.  For specific information about any photo, click on Photo Credits at the bottom of each page.
